Coaches are responsible for the conduct of their players and fans. If a
coach is unable to take control, after being warned by the umpire, the
team with the violating player, players or fans could forfeit that game.
Only the coach is permitted to approach the umpire and question a call
or ruling.

Any player may be ejected from the game by the official. If any player
is ejected from a game he will not be able to play in the next league game.
Any player ejected from two games in a season will not be able to play
the rest of the season.

Players, coaches, other team members or spectators shall not make disparaging
or insulting remarks to or about opposing players, officials, or spectators,
or commit other acts that could be considered unsportsman like conduct.

A person ejected from a game can be told to leave the grounds. Failure
to do so will warrant a forfeiture of the game.

10 minutes after game start time is forfeit time for the 5:30 game. Game
time is forfeit time for the 6:45 game.

Game time is 1 hour and 10 minutes.

A mat will be used behind home plate to determine balls and strikes. The
batter gets 3 balls to walk and 2 strikes for an out. (with one strike
on the batter you can only hit one foul ball without being out.)

Walks Men that walk with no strikes get 2 bases. Men that walk with
a strike only gets one base. Women only get one base on a walk.

The pitchers must maintain a 12 foot arc limit and a 6 foot minimum on
their pitches. Violation of this requirement would result in a illegal
pitch call from the umpire , giving the batter a ball. The batter can hit
a pitch ruled illegal.

Sliding is permitted as long as no hard physical contact between players
takes place. There will be a "no collision" rule on all bases. Any collision
will require a judgment call from the official which is not subject to
dispute.

The SUMC SOFTBALL LEAGUE will provide game balls.
-
The infield fly rule will be applied and enforced by the officials.
-
No use of metal cleats will be permitted.
-
There shall be no abuse of alcoholic beverages during the games.
Violation of this rule could result in a players ejection.

Once an inning has started, players must maintain their position on the
field for the completion of that inning.
Exceptions:
A. The pitching position may change any time.
B. In case of injury when a player must leave the field.

There can be no more than ten players on the field, four of which must
be women. You cannot use more than five men on the field at one time. You
may use more than five women. If you use four women and five men on the
field the first women's spot in the batting order must be an automatic
out with your four women following.

The least you can play with is eight.

Players may play any position on the field.
-
Batting order is rotated male , female, etc., starting with either a male
or female. Women may follow women if there is an unequal number of players
and the women are the majority. Teams are permitted to bat a continuous
line up. This occurs when a team bats all their players following the above
guidelines.
EXAMPLE:
A. You bat 18 players alternating male, female.
B. In the field you play 5 men and 5 female.
C. You are now free to substitute players in the field every inning
if you choose, and the batting order never changes.

Re-enters Any of the starting players may be withdrawn and re-entered
provided players occupy the same batting positions whenever in the line-up.
The original player and the substitute player cannot be in the game at
the same time. Violation of the re-entry rule could result in a forfeit.

Teams will flip a coin for Home Team rights before every game.

Women may bunt.
-
If a pitcher desires to walk a batter intentionally, he may do so by notifying
the plate umpire.

When a runner is obstructed while advancing or returning to a base by a
fielder who neither has the ball or is attempting to field a batted ball,
the umpire shall award the obstructed runner and each other runner affected
by the obstruction the bases they would have reached, in his judgment,
had there been no obstruction.

No offensive player may touch home plate. The first offense of this rule
and a warning will be given. The second offense will result in an automatic
out.
Home plate belongs to the defensive team. To score a run, the offensive
player must run through home plate and a cone which is placed adjacent
to each other. In order to get the runner out the defensive player must
catch the ball, with their foot on home plate, (not the mat) before the
runner crosses between the plate and the cone. The player running home
can also be tagged out by any fielder before passing the cone.

We also have a commit line between third and home. If a runner passes the
commit cone, he has to go home. Enforcement of this rule is done by an
appeal to the umpire.

When a defensive player has the ball and is waiting for the runner, the
runner may not run into or slide into the defensive player with great force.
The runner will be declared out and may be ejected from the game.

When a runner, after being declared out, interferes with a defensives players
opportunity to make a play on another runner, the runner closest to home
is declared out.

A base runner can be declared out if he runs more than 3 feet from a direct
line between one base and the next one in order to avoid being touched
by the ball in the hands of a fielder.

Protests
A. Misinterpretation of a playing rule.
B. Failure of an umpire to apply the correct rule to a given situation.
The notification of intent to protest Must be made immediately before
the next pitch. The manager or coach of the protesting team shall immediately
notify the plate umpire that the game is being conducted under protest.
The official written protest must be sent to Susan Cabral at HG005 within
48 hours. The protest should contain the following :
A. Date and time of game.
B. Name of umpire.
C. The rule under protest.
D. The decision and condition surrounding the protest, and all essential
facts.

No player may wear Stanford Hospital scrubs while playing softball.

Certain Bats will not be permitted to be used in the SUMC Softball League.
The Titanium bat and the double wall bats will not be allowed for Co-Ed
play. The umpire will check for illegal bats before the start of each game.
If a bat is deemed illegal, it shall be put away and not brought out. If
a team is caught using a bat deemed illegal the umpire can forfeit that
team for doing so. All bats that are used for any game will be collected
and placed behind the plate for all team members to use. If you don't want
your bat to be used by the opposing team, keep the bat in your car. The
only time a bat can be added to the game bats, after the game has
started, is by a player that has showed up late to the game.

In order for a player to participate in the play-offs, he or she must have
been on that teams roster and must have played in at least three games
during the regular season. The player must also be a Stanford employee
or significant other of a Stanford employee, student or contract employee.
Before each game a roster will be signed to keep track of players and games
played in by each member of your team. If you have any questions regarding
eligibility contact the Commish for clarification.

Limits of liability by Stanford : "Your employer or it's insurance
carrier will not be liable for payments of Workers Compensation benefits
for any injury or illness which arises out of an employees voluntary participation
in an off duty recreational, social or athletic activity which is not a
part of the employee's work related duties."
